There really is no set amount of time a dog "should" sleep. If a dog is tired, it will curl up somewhere and go to sleep...and then be up and running 5 minutes later when the door bell rings!

I don't believe my JRTs have EVER slept 16-17 hours in a day...and they're 8 1/2 years old...
